Pat McDonnell started in the paint business with Harrington, Goodlass and Wall (HGW Paints) in 1967. He spent 10 years with HGW paints, which went on to become Dulux Paints Ireland Ltd., 3 of those years in the laboratory and 7 years in the sales department.

Sensing an opportunity in the market Pat left in 1977 to establish, along with his wife Cora, Pat McDonnell Paint Sales in 63 Grattan Street, Cork. Pat soon outgrew these premises and moved next door to a larger building and then again to a much larger building around the corner on Bachelors Quay.

A second store in Cork was opened in 1997 on Centre Park Road and then the company grew by opening new stores in Kilkenny (2000), Tralee (2001), Athlone (2003), Galway (2005), Nutgrove in Dublin (2013) and Limerick (2018).
